Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life — that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. — The Matrix
How to be Legendary

Take the red pill.

Have you ever wondered if there’s more to life?

I know I have. It’s always seemed to me as if the world we live in isn’t quite right. I’ve always felt that the way we live isn’t the way we were meant to live. It feels as if, once upon a time, we all had to believe in something, so we agreed to believe in a lie — and in time, we came to believe that the lie was real, and forgot the truth beneath it.

So might there be more, beneath the surface?

You only need to go to the movies to hear all about it. Right now, we call that stuff “fantasy.” We all know the stories — rendered in widescreen glory with THX surround sound — of people who suddenly reach an epiphany and start to value their lives like never before. Typically, these people start to notice sunsets and the beauty of flowers. They quit their crappy jobs and reconnect with their families, they ride bulls and create their art and skydive and live like they’re dying, and they live happily ever.

But that’s fantasy, not reality. Reality is harder, which is why fantasy exists in the first place — as a modicum of escape from the ordinary.

In reality, we’ve got bills to pay. Jobs to do. Grindstones to keep our noses to. In reality, we’re gifted in a few ways and need to accept our limitations in other, more numerous ways. In reality, we learn to understand that our waists will inevitably thicken as we get older, and our abilities will diminish. In reality, we say things like, “I missed my chance; I’m too old for that now.” In reality, we accept what we’re given and are grateful for it, because so many others have so much less.

In reality, we settle.

Well, fuck that.

Reality is not what it used to be.

I can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accepts what he sees because he expects to wake up. — The Matrix

Wake up.

WAKE UP.

We’ve been lulled into believing that we have to settle, but it’s not true. We’ve been told that we should be happy with what we have — and while that’s true, we were also meant to grow, to create, and to become more as humans in the short time we have. We’ve been led to believe that where you are is where you are, and that if you’re stuck, you’re stuck. We’ve been led to believe that when something seems impossible, it is.

There are people who consider me a leader, but that’s just because I’ve got one of the biggest mouths. In truth, I’m just a guy who unplugged from the matrix and realized that the emperor has no clothes. I’ve pushed at the world and have said, I broke your rule. What are you going to do about it? And the “normal” world does nothing. It can’t. It’s not real.

The real world is about possibility. In the real world, you can achieve almost anything if you put in the time and the effort, and if you’re willing to sit through the setbacks and the stagnation you will experience along the way. In the real world, you need shelter, food, water, and air, and while you may want designer couches and the approval of your neighbors and may choose to pursue those things, you do not, in any way, need them. In the real world, you realize that foregoing some comfort in exchange for satisfaction and joy is a worthwhile trade. In the real world, you can never fail; you can only quit.

In the real world, the clock is ticking. In the real world, you will die — and in the meantime, you have exactly one life to live as you see fit… not as anyone else sees fit.

Welcome to the real world

I’ve met a ton of amazing people, and those people have redefined the way I look at life and at possibility. I want to meet more people like that. I want to surround myself with people who are unplugged. People who get it. People who understand that there are very few limitations in life that are not self-imposed, and are willing to dedicate their lives to the pursuit of becoming Legendary.

In a Legendary life, you do what you want to do with your time.

In a Legendary life, you have the body you want, the environment you want, and the abilities you want to have.

In a Legendary life, you set goals knowing you will achieve them unless you — and nobody else — change your mind.

Is it easy? Hell no. But is it worth it? Is it possible? Is it worth dedicating your life to… instead of dedicating your life to watching every Seinfeld rerun six times in the evenings while stressing about someone else’s problems thanks to a soul-sucking existence you barely remember consenting to?

HELL YES.

Legendary. Every day.

People hear me talk about becoming bigger, better, epic… Legendary… and say, “Yeah, but how?”

Usually this question comes with a lot of baggage. Some people are in jobs they loathe, but they need those jobs to put food on the table for their kids. Some people are in very, very bad situations, and they feel like their worlds are falling apart. They seem to be saying, Easy for you, Johnny. Your job is writing on the internet. You make your own schedule and spend a ton of time doing whatever you want to do. What do you have to complain about?

Read this. Then come back.

I wrote the post linked above in March of 2009. Today, at the age of 36, I make six figures doing exactly what I want to do. I love everything I do in my job. EVERYTHING. In a span of two months, I did an Olympic triathlon, a cycle century, a marathon, and a half-Ironman triathlon. I published a novel that had been in my closet for twelve years and am writing another, with the goal of making enough from writing fiction alone to support my family in a few years. I have a very popular blog and two podcasts. Thanks to homeschooling and flexible schedules, I spend tons of time with my family — park days, waterpark days, museum trips, soccer games and scout hikes — even during the “work day.” I can lift 475 pounds. With the help of my new personal trainer, I finally got a six-pack. (Roger calls this process “sexification.) Oh, and although I’ve been a type-1, insulin-dependent diabetic since age 13, I have none of the “usual” debilitating complications, and my hemoglobin A1c (a measure of average blood sugar over time) is probably about the same as yours.

Despite feeling desperate and afraid and panicked 24/7 in 2009 — despite feeling like all of the walls were coming down on me — it all worked out. I got to where I wanted to be, and am still striving, still reaching for more.

I don’t care how deep the shit is that you’re in. You can get out of it. You can build the life you want.

How?

One day at a time.

Introducing Everyday Legendary — a community of people like you, dedicated to becoming more, every single day.

Before I get into the details of what the Everyday Legendary community entails — and to satisfy that “one day at a time” cliffhanger I just laid on you — it’s very important that you understand three things:

  1. Everyday Legendary isn’t about me teaching you magic secrets.
Twice a month, I’m going to lay a “lesson” on you, but that means I’m giving you my own experience and some tips about what I’ve found works and doesn’t work — NOT that I’m divulging any insider secrets that will “make the difference” in and of themselves. One of the foundation principles of Everyday Legendary is that success is simple. Not easy, but simple. That means you already know everything you need to know in order to be, do, or have just about anything you’d like to be, do, or have. You just need to do it — ideally with the kind of support you’ll get in our community. So yes, I can and will give you my thoughts and experiences and tips, but don’t expect any of that to make magic things happen. You already know the most important things right here, right now.
  2. It is VERY inexpensive to join.
At only $14.99 per month, it’s the least I’ve ever charged for anything — and that’s true despite the fact that it’s required more work than just about anything I’ve ever done. This is because I don’t want price to be a barrier for anyone. I want awesome people, and I understand that awesome people might not yet have awesome levels of disposable income. $14.99 is much less than you probably spend on your cell phone, internet connection, cable TV, gym membership, a quarter-tank of gas, or lunch at Panera. This is an investment in you, and I want it to be a no-brainer. Because I’m sorry… if you can’t find $15 in your budget to invest in yourself, I can’t help you anyway.
  3. It’s an example of itself.
You may be wondering why, if this is so important to me, I’m charging anything at all. The reason is because I practice what I preach. In order to create a Legendary life, you need to find ways to make your joys and passions work together with your needs. Creating this community allows me to give while receiving. If you join, I’ll show you ways to do the same.

So with that out of the way, here’s what Everyday Legendary entails.

The Legendary foundation

There are four main premises behind Everyday Legendary:

  1. You do not need more knowledge. You need to find ways to apply the knowledge you already have.
In other words, you need a push. That push might come from listening to or reading more in the area you’re trying to improve and seeing ways in which it’s possible. It might come from following the lessons in Everyday Legendary and taking up the challenges I offer. It might come from getting your questions answered, or from being pushed or held accountable. If you get into the community and feel like you’re falling behind and that everyone else is doing more work than you are, good. That’s what you want. Remember how it’s worthwhile to trade short-term discomfort for long-term satisfaction and joy? Well, feeling a bit shamed because you’re not “doing the work” might be just what it takes to make you start doing that work.
  2. You become like the people you associate with.
Ever hear the expression, “If you lie down with dogs, you’ll get up with fleas?” It’s equally true that if you lie down with people who are focused on becoming Legendary, you’ll find yourself doing the same.
  3. Legendary lives are built on conscious living.
That may sound obvious, but most of us don’t live consciously. We go through life on autopilot, making decisions based on motivations that would fall apart if we ever looked at them seriously. I would never presume to tell you what you should go after in life. There are things I’d never do that you may want to keep doing, and that’s totally fine… as long as you’ve looked at that choice objectively and have consciously decided that you truly want to do it with the full knowledge of where that choice is taking you. Being a part of the Everyday Legendary community will keep you conscious. Awake. Aware of the decisions you’re making and the prices you’re paying.

    And, most importantly:

  4. Success in anything comes from tiny steps taken over a long period of time.
When I said that you can dig out of your shitty situation “one day at a time,” it’s the truth. Today might be hard. Tomorrow might be hard. Tuesday three months from now might be hard. It doesn’t matter. As long as you’re taking small steps EVERY DAY and never give up, you’ll get there with hard work and time. We have a warped idea that lives are supposed to change overnight — that we’ll discover an Easy button that will take us from a terrible job to bliss — and it’s this warped idea that causes so many people to fail. Of course your big goal looks impossible. All big goals look impossible when you first conceive of them.

People don’t fail because their goals are impossible. They fail because achieving what you really want takes a ton of patience and hard work. If that’s not what you want to hear, I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. If you aren’t willing to put in hard work every day to get the results that other people think are impossible, you shouldn’t join us. We’ve all had just about enough coddling on this issue. It’s the truth — not more feel-good bullshit — that will set us free.

What you get

Everyday Legendary is simple. If it wasn’t, you’d get bogged down in details and in “getting everything right” instead of doing the damn work, which is what matters.

There are four basic components:

  • Two audio lessons each month on a given topic.
Every other week, I’ll release a new lesson on a topic about which a lot of people are interested in becoming “Legendary.” (And yes, you can submit requests.) Here are a few ideas that have been requested so far:
  • Building a business that you love (And because this is a specialty of mine, we can go deeper, too, into the details of improving your business, marketing it, honing your pitch, etc. if you ask me for it.)
  • How to find the time for the things you want to do… including THIS process of “becoming Legendary.”
  • Physical fitness and generally getting in shape (by YOUR definition, not society’s)
  • Giving yourself a financial “reality check”… which will really open your eyes to what is possible with what you already have or the money you already make.
  • Life hacking and productivity (spending less time on the crap you hate so you have more for what you love)
  • Networking and meeting people who can help you (and who you can help)
  • Getting past feeling “stuck.”
  • Writing — and this one is surprisingly popular, with some wanting to do creative writing and some wanting to expand their marketing through the use of writing in general or perhaps via storytelling. (The ability to write well is, in my opinion, a huge shortcut to achieving what you want.)
  • Forming winning habits and getting out of old bad habits
  • Being a Legendary parent
  • Building Legendary relationships
  • Knowing when to give up and when to keep going
  • … and a crapload more, including your requests

(NOTE ABOUT SWEARING: I’m known for having a somewhat foul mouth. However, there is no profanity on any of these audio recordings. I know a lot of people like to listen to things in the car, and I know a lot of people have kids in the car with them. I may swear on my podcasts, but not here. I don’t want you to have any reason to not listen.)

All of these recordings will be transcribed, for those of you who prefer to read or are hearing impaired.

  • Your challenge.
This is about small, measurable steps toward bigger goals, so in the lessons, I’ll prompt you to issue yourself a challenge or goal. Now, note that I didn’t say, “I will issue you a challenge or goal.” That’s because your interpretation of “Legendary” is highly subjective and is nobody’s business but yours, and nobody should set your goals and/or challenges but you. I will make suggestions (if we talk diet, I might suggest trying paleo or intermittent fasting), but the decision is yours. You may choose to share this challenge in the community so that you’re held accountable (which I’d encourage), or you may keep it private. Your call.
  • Community and accountability in the private Everyday Legendary forums.
The fellowship of people who are on the same journey as you are is VITAL to making progress. Have you ever been dragged down by being around someone who’s doing nothing with their life? The opposite happens too. Our forums are filled with people who are doing things and refusing to settle. We have areas in the forums to discuss the lessons, areas for finding accountability partners to make sure you do the things you say you want to do, areas for recording progress on your goals. Funny thing about that last one… stating publicly that you’ll do something has a funny way of getting you to do it. I see it again and again.
  • Your questions, answered.
Got a question? Awesome. You can email it to me, and I’ll answer it in an upcoming session.

Ready to get Legendary?

I’ve already blown the punchline on the price. Everyday Legendary is only $14.99 per month. (And yes, you can cancel whenever you want. There is NO contract or obligation to continue for a fixed time.)

That’s less than you’d spend going out to dinner or buying a cheap pair of sunglasses. If you’ve read this far, it should be a no-brainer, which is what I’d intended. You deserve to be Legendary, and I don’t want price to stop you.

So just click the big button… and let’s get Legendary!

P.S: If you see any bullshit on this page, I apologize. I tried to make it bullshit-free. But just in case, let’s make a few things even more clear: I’m not going to give you amazing new knowledge that will make you rich or successful overnight. I won’t “do it for you.” There is no magic here at all… just hard work. If you don’t want to work hard to get the Legendary life you deserve, don’t join. You will be uncomfortable during the process of going from where you are to where you want to be. You will fail along the way to success, probably repeatedly.

Did I miss anything terribly depressing or unpleasant?

I could blow smoke up your butt and promise an easy way to wealth and awesomeness, but that would be really cruel. I mean, think about something: Have you noticed how very few people have what they truly want? The list above are the reasons why they don’t. Nobody wants to do the hard work and to hear that nobody can do it for them. But this is GOOD news for you. If success were due to magic or luck, you’d be screwed. But it’s not… so if you put in that hard work and effort, you can have what others will never have. You can have what the world would say is impossible.
